Creativity in the Home

It’s proven that visual art is critical to a child’s development and fosters academic achievement throughout life. Creating a work of art involves choice, decision making, re-evaluating options, openness to alternatives, and forging important cognitive connections. It encourages students to think outside the box, to consider the possibility of there being more than one answer to a given problem and to take risks. It’s not hard to see how a scientific researcher or corporate leader might benefit from that skill set.  So let go and have fun.

This is a simple and relatively easy project for all ages.  First step is picking out an animal.  You can get almost any animal stencil free from the web.  Trace it and either you or the child cut it out, then paste on a piece of black construction paper.  The next step is my childs favorite, tear up all different colors of paper.  Even different textures can be fun.  Give your child a glue stick and they can have fun giving their animal fur or feathers.  A google eye works great for the eye but even a dried bean can work too.  Remember it is not the end product but the process.  Most importantly have fun!

  • I just bought a Color Me House at Costco last weekend and we LOVE it. All the neighborhood kids came by to color. We really had fun. Thank you!

Next weekend, we are going to bring one to a birthday party we are going to. I can’t wait!
